1. So I discovered something nice today. Darling Creative Agency linked to my work as inspiration. That pretty special to me. And, it’s pretty nice to see someone take advantage of the larger files I made available! They presented my work wonderfully. :)

If you scroll through their art and skulls tags (the two associated with mine) the work is pretty impressive and definitely inspiring. It’s humbling in a way too. So, Darling Creative in now a definite follow. Thanks for the props. :)

Oh, and I included the screen grabs of their site as eye candy. Enjoy.

  2. ТЕСНОТА ВЕБЗИН: The Hyrtl Project Hits Russia

When the Hyrtl Project was exhibited at the World Design Expo in Taipei I was thrilled my work was being recognized internationally.  And Now …

I received an email from the Russian Tech, Art and Culture Zine ТЕСНОТА ВЕБЗИН requesting an interview. They found my work online and want to feature it on their website. It will be interesting to find out what attracted them to the work. I think I might have as many questions for them as they will have for me.

I’ll post a link to the article when it is published.

    It’s Official!
    ADAA Semifinalist in Interaction Design!

    ADAA 2012 Crest colored

Union Square in Motion (USiM) has been officially selected as a semifinalist project in the 2012 Adobe Design Achievement Awards in Interactive Installation Design!

This will be the third award I have had the honor of receiving from Adobe. I’m picturing us all in LA, on stage, excepting our awards. :) Although this was be my last entry as a student in the ADAAs, I’m very happy to be sharing this accomplishment with an amazing group of designers and technologists as well.

USiM started in January of 2011 as just a hope. On September 26th 2011, we had our opening night, supported by the MTA, Parsons, all our friends and more. I’m very hopeful that come September of 2012 - we will all be ADAA Finalist, and in October, standing on stage at MAX 2012 in LA, as Winners.

I’ll keep posting the progress, wish us luck!

    Again! :)

  4. “Gothic” Show Catalog Available

I was recently selected to be part of a juried group show   @ Orange County Center for Contemporary Art   (OCCCA) in Santa Ana CA.  The theme, Gothic, seemed a perfect fit for my thesis work with the Mütter Museum. The catalog is now available for perusal and purchase. You can view a web PDF for the catalog by clicking HERE, or to purchase, Click HERE. The Hyrtl piece, my selection, can be found on page 39.

    The 2012 ADAA

It’s always exciting to be judged by the best.

Union Square in Motion (USiM) has been officially entered into the 2012 Adobe Design Achievement Awards in Interactive Installation. This will be my second and last year entering the Awards as a MFA student from Parsons. USiM started in January of 2011 as just a hope. On September 26th 2011, we had our opening night, supported by the MTA, Parsons, all our friends and more. Hopefully in September of 2012 we will all be ADAA Finalist, and in October, standing on stage at MAX 2012 in LA, as winners.

I’ll keep updating on our progress through the rounds of Judging.

    The Awl | Hairpin

This was a fun a relaxed interview I had with write L.V. Anderson for the segment “Kickstarted to the Curb”. The focus was on “what happens to awesome projects when they don’t make their funding goals.”

I’ve been told several time that you can certainly hear my voice in there.

  7. It’s Nice to Have Hard Work Recognized!

A Great Writeup by Hannington Dia in HD in Effect

“Sebek was qiuck to cite one person as the main reason “Union Square In Motion” exists today. As one of the 18 scholars in the collab course, Jeanne Kelly served as not only one of the creators, but a project manager as well, making sure students were on top of their work. “It was a challenge because some of them had just gotten jobs or left the city,” Kelly says. “But they were eager to have their names attached to such a prestigious undertaking.”
“We started doing weekly meetings where we designed prototypes and tested 60-70 different types of animations to see which one would work the best. Fine-line drawing animations didn’t work well with zoetropes because they reduced and resized optical images with poor effects. Subtle animations weren’t that successful either, since they had limited space and weren’t as visually exciting.”
    Thanks for the props Anezka!

  8. Two Minute Segment on NY1 | “New Artwork Best Seen In Transit Through Union Square Station”

I was contacted by New York City’s local television news station New York 1 to interview for a segment on our interactive installation in Union Square, Union Square in Motion. Photobucket

After getting some approval from the station, I contacted the rest of the team so they could get in on the limelight. We met down in front of the piece early on a Tuesday morning for our television debute. It was fun, and I think Josh especially liked the cameras. ;)

There are some errors in the segment (such as - Josh is not Professor and I am not a Student lol) but for the most part it’s pretty accurate and I have no complaints.

We were suprised to also receive a random critique that morning by none other then the design duo Coco and Breeze, who called our work (and the creators) visionary. Quite high praise indeed. Thank you ladies!

  10. Finalist in the ADAA

I am excited and deeply honored to official announce I am a Finalist in the 2011 Adobe Design Achievement Awards in Interactive Media/Installation Design!

As one of three finalist chosen by Adobe and Icograda from all across the globe, I’ve been given the opportunity to attend the International Design Allience Congress in Taipei!  The line up of speakers and workshops gives me goosebumps. It’s like when you were a kid and you found out you were going to Disney World! I can’t wait! Even if I don’t “win” win, I’ve already won!! :D

    My profile picture

Adobe and Icograda are flying all finalist to Taiwan for the awards ceremony and generously providing a hotel room and conference passes to the 2011 IDA Congress for October 21st through October 26th!

The Hyrtl Project will be on display from September 30th through October 30th at the 2011 Taipei World Design Expo at the Taiwan World trade Center, a parallel event to the 2011 IDA Congress. They are expecting over 1,000,000 visitors!

I haven’t even seen the installation design for the project yet and I’m excited to see how someone else would curate the piece, especially with so many missing elements involved as well!

MTA’s Latest Zoetrope Will Mesmerize You… If You Let It!

    Fri, Sep 30, 2011

Last Monday the MTA debuted its latest zoetrope, “Union Square in Motion,” in the Union Square subway station, which consists of two “digital lenticular linear zoetropes that project nine sets of still abstract images, which create the illusion of animation for commuters passing by,” reports WNYC.

“Union Square in Motion” is the largest of its kind in the world, claim its creators – six artists and two producers out of Parsons via The New School of Design. The nature of the project makes it so that when viewed from different angles different images appear. “The goal of the installation is to give riders a break, making their experience a little more interesting and enjoyable,” claims the groups Facebook page.

Passersby have either disregarded the installation in the midst of their mid-morning, afternoon, or daily rush, or stood mesmerized, alleviated from the pangs of their working lives by the magical synapses this zoetrope inspires within their minds.

Union Square Station Adds Some Motion To Its Ocean

On Monday, Union Square station unveiled its new digital interactive installation,Union Square in Motion. Part of the MTA’s Artist for Transit initiative, the piece is designed to “give riders a break,” and boy, you may need one! Featuring nine colorful scenes of wonky shapes, nature, and dancers, the installation, designed by Parsons students, is said to be the world’s largest linear zoetrope. Hopefully this also makes it the world’s most fun digital linear zoetrope. Kids are said to be getting smudge marks all over the glass, if that’s any kind of indicator. At the moment there’s no official tear-down date, so assume it’ll be up for a while unless the glass-smudging gets totally out of hand.

Look | MTA Installs New Digital Underground Art Project at Union Square

    Tuesday, September 27, 2011

On Monday, the MTA opened a new digital art exhibit at its Union Square station in Manhattan. The underground show, called “Union Square in Motion,” is two digital lenticular linear zoetropes that project nine sets of still abstract images, which create the illusion of animation for commuters passing by.

The project is, according to its creators, the largest of its kind in the world. But it is not the subway’s first zoetrope.

The images were designed by Parsons students Jeanne Kelly, Hilal Koyuncu, Rose Maison, Umut Ozover, Josefina Santos and Jaqi Vigil. The images were designed by Parsons students Jeanne Kelly, Hilal Koyuncu, Rose Maison, Umut Ozover, Josefina Santos and Jaqi Vigil. (Julia Furlan/WNYC)

“Bryant Park in Motion” was the first digital linear zoetrope to be installed by the MTA. The project was in the 42nd St.-Bryant Park subway station last year. (Check out this video of two guys scoping it out here.)

Commuters passing through the subway tunnel north of Dekalb Ave. may also remember filmmaker Bill Brant’s “Masstransiscope,” another zoetrope (but not of the digital variety) that was installed in the tunnel in 1980 and restored in 2009.

“Union Square in Motion” was created students at Parsons the New School of Design. Check out images of the project below.

Union Square Subway Station Now Boasts the World’s Largest Linear Digital Zoetrope

     Categories: ArtJen DollMTAThe Subway

Tonight at 7 p.m. at the Union Square subway station, in a temporarily vacant retail space just down the stairs below the Food Emporium at 14th Street and 4th Avenue, Professor Joshua Spodek and his students will officially unveil “Union Square in Motion,” an interactive art installation considered the world’s largest digital linear zoetrope. What’s a zoetrope? It’s a series of still images that create the “appearance of animation” as you walk past them. Spodek told us, “A zoetrope is something that normally kids play with; it’s an early animation device. You’d spin it around and see, maybe, a horse galloping inside. I make linear zoetropes. The main difference is that they’re straight instead of round, as long as the space allows.”

  15. Union Square Lenticular Zoetrope Goes Up!

    SEPTEMBER 17TH 2011

We installed the digital lenticular zoetropes in Union Square today. We got a bit of a late start, but once we got everthing down into the subway we were rolling.  We finished up around 9pm with everything running well and all the animations looping.

Stay tuned for hidden camera footage of the participants! Installation beginning September 22nd!
